Now, fly to S'pore @ Rs 10,000

TIMES NEWS NETWORK [ FRIDAY, MARCH 18, 2005 09:58:04 PM ]

NEW DELHI: For Indians planning overseas vacations, there's good news. Travelling abroad will be cheaper this summer as three new entrants in the international skies — Air Sahara, Air-India Express and Air Arabia — on Friday took ticket prices to a new low.

India's second largest private carrier Air Sahara fired the first offensive in this fresh international air fare war. It's offer: economy class return fares to Singapore and Kuala Lumpur for Rs 10,000.

This is lower than some of the fares that the airline offers on its domestic trunk routes. Besides, it is nearly 38% cheaper than the existing lowest published fare of Rs 16,000 on these Asean routes, Air Sahara CEO Rono J Dutta said.

The discount fares would mark Air Sahara's entry into the Asean markets. "While the first Singapore-Delhi flight would take off on May 11, the Chennai-Kuala Lumpur service would be launched on May 14. Both return services would be daylight flights," Dutta said.

Within hours of this announcement, Air-India unveiled the discount fares for its no-frills start-up A-I Express, which will be launched on April 29. The airline issued the first India-Abu Dhabi return ticket for as low as Rs 6,500. It's nearly half the price of a full service regular return ticket on the Delhi-Mumbai route.

A-I CMD V Thulasidas also said similar competitive fares would be offered when the airline starts services to newer destinations, including some Asean nations. "The fares on all routes being operated by A-I Express will be about 25% cheaper than the existing fares," he added.
