Two Indian firms set up Singapore units
09 September 2004

Two major companies - Gail (India), formerly Gas Authority of India Ltd, and Ushacomm, a software company belonging to the Usha Martin group - will set up shop in Singapore to expand their global operations.

Gail will set up a subsidiary to manage its overseas investments, as it pursues business opportunities in Myanmar and the Philippines. The subsidiary will take care of Gail's Egyptian operations relating to its recent acquisition of a 15 per cent equity stake in National Gas Company Egypt.

Ushacomm, meanwhile, announced the opening of two offshore centres - one in Singapore and the other, in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The new centres will mainly serve the company's existing customers to meet the growing business demands of communications providers in emerging markets, Ushacomm managing director Bharat Kakkar said.

Ushacomm, a part of the Kolkatta-based Usha Martin group, is a global provider of low-cost telecoms software for fixed, mobile, cable and satellite and broadband communications.

The move is part of the London-based Ushacomm's global expansion plan that it had announced a few months back under which it intends to recruit an additional 200 Indian software personnel.

'To meet our objective it is necessary to expand our resources in the Middle East, Africa and Asia, whilst also investing in manpower in India to develop the latest technology.' Mr Kakkar added.
