S For Indian business schools with global ambitions, Singapore is fast emerging as a hot destination. Earlier this year, IIM Bangalore announced its plans to set up a campus there. And now the Mumbai-based SP Jain Institute of Management and Research is planning to do the same.
If executed, this will be SP Jain's second global foray within two years. In 2004, the institute set up a campus in Dubai and became the first to offer a fully residential full-time MBA programme in the Middle East. Buoyed by its success, it has now set its sights on Singapore.
Interestingly, both SP Jain and IIM-B plan to target the Indian Diaspora in Singapore. Almost 7.9% of the 4 million population of Singapore are of Indian origin, making it the third largest ethnic group after the Chinese (76.8%) and the Malays (13.9%).
IIM-B is planning to target working executives settled in Singapore through short-term executive education programmes and executive MBA, while SP Jain may offer either a full-time programme or an executive MBA. "Whatever programmes we run will have a fair bit of localisation," says M L Shrikant, honorary dean, SP Jain. "There will be a strong India component in programmes, as the world is increasingly getting interested in Indian region," she added.
Both IIM-B and SP Jain plan to fly down faculty from India. This could create a serious resource crunch, especially for SP Jain, since the same faculty is also teaching in Dubai. "This is likely to put a lot of pressure on resources so we are in the process of employing more faculty," said Shrikant.
The two Indian schools will have to fend off competition from global B-schools like INSEAD and fast-improving local B-schools, NUS Business School.
