Singapore Sling
A new fashion store has the Lion City abuzz

Express Features Service, Mumbai Newsline, 12 September 2004

Singapore just got a dash of India as fashion store Mumbai Se opened up last month. The store is situated at the luxurious Palais Renaissance shopping arcade along Orchard Road. It is owned by Royal Sporting House, the famous retailer of sportswear, and run by its CEO Sajni Gill. The company is also a distributor for Mango, Zara and Bebe in several Asian countries.

The 5000-square foot store has some of India's hottest names in fashion-there are Monisha Jaising, Rina Dhaka, Geisha, Manish Arora, Satya Paul, Mana Shetty and Rocky S. Lara Dutta was flown out especially for the launch.

Gill is in Mumbai currently, refreshing the stock of her just 3-week-old store. ''The response was tremendous, I had to get new stocks,'' she says. An old hand at retail fashion, Gill came to India for the last India Fashion Week and made her selections. ''I chose designers who were suitable for my concept-Indian clothes made in a contemporary way, so there's a bit of Indian and international in them,'' she explains. Gill was immensely impressed by the Indian lot. ''I barely knew what was going on in the fashion scene here, but the standards were so high and everyone was so professional,'' she says.

Gill believes there's a huge market for Indian fashion abroad. ''Most of my customers are Chinese or expats. And with Bollywood going everywhere, Indian designers are sporadically following suit.''
